Smartwatches on the market today offer limited capabilities, but one company aims to change that and actually work to help patients living with epilepsy.
Embrace, a smartwatch created by an MIT Media Lab team that can measure changes on the surface of the skin to detect seizures, has already raised nearly $500,000 on crowdfunding site Indiegogo out of a goal of $100,000 (the campaign ends Jan. 21 at 11:59 p.m.).
The watch, which syncs up to a smartphone app, can alert caregivers about their child having a seizure, according to Matteo Lai, CEO of Cambridge-based Empatica, the company behind the watch. Along with a sensor that can detect changes in the skin, the watch has three other sensors that track heart rate, movement and temperature.
The Epilepsy Network is a worldwide community of people with epilepsy, family and friends, uniting to talk about their experiences, learn information about epilepsy, ask questions and so much more! Don’t let epilepsy defeat you, let it inspire you!
