Last May, 18-year old Rachel Vella underwent a world-first epilepsy surgery. Innovative technology allowed surgeons to remove a very small part of her brain tissue that had been causing her seizures for three years. Carrying a Maltese surname, Rachel lives in Melbourne Australia with her parents Frank and Carrol. Frank’s parents were both born in Malta, and Carrol also has Maltese relatives. In an exclusive interview conducted via email, Rachel speaks to Therese Bonnici about the risks involved in the surgery, which could have left her paralyzed.
