For parents who have children with epilepsy, something as seemingly simple as planning family meals can require complex calculations. That’s because many of them, under the guidance of their children’s physicians, are turning to high fat low carb ketogenic diets that are precisely calculated to control seizures. Now several health professionals have worked together to design a mobile approach that they hope will simplify treatment, reported the Journal of Mobile Technology in Medicine on July 28.
Several studies have shown that ketogenic diets can provide physicians with an alternative to medication for patients who do not respond to other medications. However, because these types of low carb high fat (LCHF) diet plans must be calculated to include the correct proportions of protein, carbohydrates and fat, it can be challenging for parents to implement.
The medical professionals therefore decided to explore a way to use mobile applications to streamline meal planning. They used a linear algebraic model to automate the process. Although other ketogenic diet calculators are available, they feel that the mobile option offers both convenience and ease-of-use.
