Justin Gutierrez of Hutto is a bright 10-year-old who deals with a health problem that’s more common than most people believe: epilepsy.
“There are more kids that have epilepsy than anyone really realizes,” his mom, Debbie Ford Gutierrez, explained. “These are normal kids so until they have a seizure you never know it.”
But Camp Brainstorm, a special summer camp for children with epilepsy, has Jason smiling and excited … so much so that he and his family are donating the proceeds from a lemonade stand they work at the Hutto Farmers Market.
“I did fishing, canoeing, zipline: The Screamer, swimming, archery,” the excited soon-to-be middle-schooler said. “It’s all about sports.”
He could not stop smiling when school or camp was the topic of conversation.
The Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas holds the camp free of charge for those who qualify.
“He’s always wanted to do a lemonade stand,” his mother said. “So I asked him if he wanted to do one and help raise some money for the epilepsy foundation. He helped me make the lemonade.”
According to epilepsycamp.com, Camp Brainstorm is a five-day, four-night resident summer camp for children with epilepsy within the 8-17 age range. Some of the children get to experience an environment with children just like them for the first time in their lives.
