After more than a year of hard work, Anoka-Hennepin is the first school district in the state to be named a Seizure Smart School District by the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota.
Several individual schools in the district had been designated as “Seizure Smart,” but parent Paul Meunier wanted to go further.
Meunier’s daughter, Hannah, had her first seizure in kindergarten. She has had more than 1,000 since that time.
Four medications help curb Hannah’s seizures, but they come with cognitive impairments. Her kindergarten teacher said she was advanced, gifted; today, she is in special education classes.
